Useful Information

First Aid Hot wax on skin.

    * Rinse affected area immediately in cold water

    * Do not attempt to wipe the hot wax; this will spread the heat and increase the burn.

    * Treat the burn, or seek medical attention.

Candle Burning Safety

    * Lighted candles should always be within sight.

    * Never leave burning candles unattended.

    * Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.

    * Keep candles away from drafts.

    * Trim wicks to 1/4 inch and keep wax pools free of wick trimmings, matches or other debris.

    * Burn candles in a well-ventilated area.

    * Always burn candles in a candle holder.

    * Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets.

    * Do not lean over a lit candle.

    * Remember that hair spray is flammable.

    * Water should never be used to extinguish a wax fire; it will only cause the fire the spread! Baking soda, sand or flour can be used if a fire extinguisher is not available.

Wax Clean-up Tips

    * If you accidentally spill wax on a counter top, table or stove, let it cool. Once hardened, use a plastic spatula to scrape it off the surface.

    * In the case of a stove top, DO NOT turn the element(s) on to try and "burn off" the wax as this can cause a fire. Use a mild abrasive commercial cleanser to remove the remaining wax.

    * Accidental spills on carpets and/or walls. Let the wax cool completely. Try to scrape off as much wax as you can. Then place a paper towel or brown paper bag over the spill. Use a warm iron and blot it over the paper. Change the paper frequently as it absorbs the wax. Take care not to let your iron get too hot as it could damage the surface you are trying to save. Please note that the candle dyes may deeply penetrate walls and carpets leaving a permanent stain.

    * In the case of a wall, you can prime the affected area and paint over it. If you have additional questions regarding the carpet, be sure to contact a carpet cleaning service. Turpentine will dissolve paraffin wax. Place a small amount on a clean rag and gently rub the area you are trying to remove the paraffin from. Take care to use it in a well ventilated area and be sure to test the surface you plan to use it on in a hidden area before proceeding. Always follow the safety precautions as shown on the product container.

Spilled Wax on Clothing and Furniture.

    * Always allow wax to harden before attempting to remove it. Gently remove the hardened wax by hand.

Spilled Wax on Carpeting.

    * Use an iron set on low and an old towel. Place towel over the spilled wax and press warm iron on top of towel. The wax will be absorbed into the towel. Repeat this step with clean parts of the towel until all wax has been removed from the carpet. Any remaining wax should be allowed to harden, brush and them vacuum. Carpet cleaner can be used to remove any dye that still remains.

Spilled Wax on Metal or Plastic Objects.

    * Place items in freezer to harden the wax. The wax may then be crumbled off the item by hand.

What is the best way to store candles?

    * Candles should be stored in a cool, dark, dry place and, for tapers, in a flat position to prevent warping. When stored properly, candles can be enjoyed for years and play an important role in traditions.

What sort of chemical reaction is created by burning a candle?

    * When a candle burns, the flame "consumes" the wax to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide, the same harmless byproducts humans produce when exhaling. This is true for all types of candle waxes.

What should I do if my candle smokes?

    * A well-made candle will create virtually no smoke when burning properly. However, noticeable smoking will occur whenever a candle's flame is disturbed, which allows minute particles of unburned carbon (soot) to escape from the flame. Any candle, regardless of formulation or wax type, can be made to smoke by causing the flame to flicker.

    * To minimize candle flickering, trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting, and place burning candles away from vents, drafts and other strong air currents.

    * If a candle continues to significantly flicker or noticeably smoke, it should be extinguished. Allow it to cool, trim the wick, check for drafts, and then re-light.

Candle Storage and Use

    * Always store candles in a cool, dark, dry place. Tapers and dinner candles should be stored flat to prevent warping.

    * Clean solid candles with a piece of nylon or a dry or damp soft cloth.

    * Remove wax from holders by running very hot water over them. Alternatively, some individuals suggest placing the candle holder in the freezer. This will allow the wax to shrink and easily pop off when the candle holder is removed from the freezer.

    * Never use a knife or a sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder; it might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.

    * Votive candles will clean easily if you add a few drops of water to the glass before inserting the candle. Caution: Do not add more than a few drops and do not add water unless you intend to burn the candle immediately afterward. Over time, a candle wick could absorb the water and no longer burn properly.

    * Candles will fade if left in the light for an extended period of time. Never put candles in a window or directly expose to bright outdoor light or indoor spotlights.

Decorating With Candles

    * Decorating With Candles are intrinsically connected to many events in our lives, such as birthdays, holiday dinners and religious celebrations. Recently, however, candles have become a part of our everyday lives adding warmth, style and mood to every room in your home. Here are some decorating ideas: * Combine candles of uniform color or varying shades of one color in a variety of shapes and widths, using a unique combination of candle holders. This display can look wonderful even when the candles aren't lit.

    * Try different size tapers in a direct line down the center of the table, spaced three inches apart in order of height (put a tall candle in the center with shorter ones going down the line on each side).

    * Fill a crystal bowl with water and add a few floating candles for a romantic centerpiece -- the cut crystal will magnify the glow of the candles. When a smaller decoration is needed, put one floating candle in a wine glass filled with water.

    * Make a centerpiece by placing a column candle in a pottery bowl and surrounding the base of the candle with smooth stones, or try using a porcelain bowl and surrounding the candle with faux pearls.

    * Turn your fireplace into a "candleplace" by filling it with candles. Vary the height with bricks or stone blocks to create the atmosphere of a glowing flame. This is great to do in the spring and summer when it is too warm to light a fire.

    * Try asymmetry for a new look. Put different sized tapers together at one end of your mantel. Change the colors and fragrances as the seasons and your moods change. Tapers are an ideal and inexpensive way to change your decor often.

    * While you can turn the average dinner into a celebration with candlelight, it is often best to use unscented candles so that the aromas of the meal can fill the air. Instead of using fragranced candles, choose those that match your china and use unique candle holders.

    * Decor Amour -- Stumped for an anniversary gift? Tired of giving blenders at wedding showers? Create a candle-lit dinner for two. Line a picnic-style basket with linen napkins, two crystal champagne flutes, elegant brass or silver candle holders, and long, romantic tapers.

    * Try a 30-minute escape right in your own bathtub! Draw a bath, pour a cup of herbal tea, light a candle or two in your favorite scent, and escape the hassles of everyday life in the flicker of candlelight.
